Nikhil Mehra

Indian fashion designer

The Maison. The Design Language. The Celebrated Label.

Shantnu Nikhil has spent over two decades reshaping Indian couture's vocabulary. Its design language blends architectural structure, fluid draping, and influences that create a contemporary expression of Indian heritage. From couture to ready-to-wear and sport, the couture label has continued to take its original design philosophy into new territories.
Rewriting The Codes Of Indian Couture

Rewriting The Codes Of Indian Couture

The ambition doesn’t follow the established language of Indian fashion, but gives it a different vocabulary.

When Shantnu Nikhil entered Indian fashion in 2000, traditional occasion wear followed familiar codes of embellishment and silhouette. They chose another direction. Structure became as important as ornamentation. Military influences met fluid drapes. Traditional Indian references took shape in sharper, more contemporary silhouettes. Over time, these elements developed into recognisable house codes, giving Shantnu Nikhil an identity that could be recognised beyond a particular collection or occasion.

The couture collections challenged established ideas of ceremonial dressing, while S&N by Shantnu Nikhil brought design language into contemporary ready-to-wear. Shantnu Nikhil Luxe brought that expression to red-carpet dressing, and Shantnu Nikhil Cricket Club brought fashion into conversatio

A Design Language Without Boundaries

A Design Language Without Boundaries

Their strong point of view remains recognisable wherever it goes.

For Shantnu Nikhil, expansion has extended design thinking rather than departed from it. The Maison has entered collaborations across fashion, sport, automotive and lifestyle, bringing its visual vocabulary into different contexts. Its association with Adidas and its work around the Mumbai Indians jersey demonstrate how the same sensibility can translate beyond couture. The ambition is to create more than garments for particular occasions. It is to establish a design language that can move across generations, disciplines and ways of living.

This philosophy found another expression in its collaboration with ROTORIS on the Manifesta Pietersite. Shantnu Nikhil designed the dark grey Italian leather strap with a lizard finish for the timepiece.

Shantnu Nikhil continues to build on a design philosophy that does not treat tradition as a fixed point. It sees it as material to be interpreted, questioned and given new form. That instinct to move beyond established codes while staying true to a distinct design identity makes Shantnu Nikhil’s association with ROTORIS a memorable one.
